COONIES PLACE
The name ‘Coonies Place’ stemmed from the original owner, dating back to 1936. Three years after the end of Prohibition, John Krebs, also known as “Coonie”, opened a bar at 25 N High Street in La Rue. The building, formerly Odd Fellows Lodge, a funeral home, and a Glick’s Dry Goods store, became the home of Coonies Place. “Coonie” was an avid coon hunter and trapper, and the place became a popular hangout for like-minded sportsmen.
